In the heart of the Kasigau Wildlife Conservancy, the dry season has historically presented a severe challenge for both our incredible wildlife and the dedicated rangers who protect them. As natural water sources diminish, animals are forced to travel vast distances to find the water they need to survive.
This seasonal struggle has not only threatened wildlife survival but has also heightened the risk of human-wildlife conflict as animals venture dangerously close to community villages in search of water.
To tackle this urgent need, the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) and Elephant Cooperation in collaboration with Kasigau Wildlife Conservancy, stepped forward to launch a borehole project aimed at creating a truly sustainable water source.
Designing a Sustainable Solution
To build a system that works for everyone, the project collaborated closely with our on-the-ground staff, our team of rangers, and environmental experts. Together, they designed a comprehensive, eco-friendly water infrastructure system that includes:
1. Two Specialized Water Troughs
One dedicated entirely to wildlife, and a second designated for community livestock.
2. A High-Capacity Storage Tank
The tank ensures a reliable, continuous reserve of water during the driest periods.
3. A Solar-Powered Pump:
Utilizing clean energy to provide an authentic, sustainable water supply for the animals without disrupting the environment.
We extend our deepest and most genuine appreciation to Elephant Cooperation and the African Wildlife Foundation for their incredible support. Thank you for helping us safeguard the future of Kasigau!

The Handover Ceremony: A New Chapter Begins
Ultimately, the highly anticipated day of the official handover arrived in August 2024. The Kasigau Wildlife Conservancy’s Board of Directors, proceeding Directors, and our entire staff were buzzing with excitement as we proudly hosted the representatives from the African Wildlife Foundation.
To mark the success of the collaboration, the handover ceremony concluded with a celebratory feast at Kiwanjani Camp, honoring everyone who poured their time and energy into making this vision a reality.
More Than Just Water
The Ruby Borehole Water Project has brought far more than just a vital life source to our ecosystem. It has actively strengthened the bonds between conservationists, partners, and the local community, ensuring we continue to walk this path of co-existence together.
